I am so sad to bring you this news. Our dear friend Ekaterin passed away last month, on May 13.
I know many of you knew and loved her. She joined this site way back in 2005, and she was a member of many, many Daily Kos community groups. I met her in the pootie diaries back in 2009, and in the following years she became like a sister to me – and I’m sure I’m not the only person here who could say that. She was so genuinely kind, so encouraging and full of enthusiasm. She was also very practical and no-nonsense when the occasion called for it. She had a wicked sense of humor, and oh my god, she LOVED cats.
Her name was Rose. She was a retired nurse. She was also a pastor, although I never saw her mention that on Daily Kos. She and Tom, her husband of fifty-four years, co-founded a church in Massachusetts about thirty-five years ago, and she delivered sermons there every Sunday right up until the end. Her faith was central to her. You would have thought that would make us unlikely buddies, me with my utter lack of religious background and positive aversion to organizations of any type. But believe me, if I’d lived remotely close to her, I would have gone to that church every week without fail, because that woman walked her talk. I’ve listened to her sermons, and they were outpourings of compassion and humor and love and very practical advice. In other words, they were what SHE was every day of her life.
Two years ago, Rose lost her beloved sister Patti to breast cancer. In April of this year, she lost her husband Tom. They were the two most precious people in her life. I am so sad - but in my heart not surprised - that she passed peacefully away just a month after Tom.
She loved all of you in her Daily Kos communities so much. I hope you can take a moment to celebrate her in the comments below. I will try to find out how to contact her surviving nephew, Kai, so he can read what you have to say.
In the meantime, let me post some pictures of a few of her kitties over the years, one of whom is positively famous in the pootie diaries.
Rest in peace, dear Rose.
Love,
