Early this morning, Daily Kos readers were informed that a city-wide strike of SEPTA (our public transit agency for Philadelphia and surrounding suburbs) was authorized and initiated.
The strike only impacts city SEPTA employees, who have a different contract than employees (mainly drivers, engineers, and conductors) who work outside of the city, either on regional rail or bus routes that are exclusively suburban.
However, unexpectedly, regional rail workers have just begun picketing at the rail yards, blocking trains from continuing on their journey. It’s basically chaos right now, especially given that the city union said that regional rail would be a good alternative for service. And now that’s totally messed up.
This almost certainly won’t impact people getting to polls more than problems already existing from city-wide service on strike, however, it could impact travel for GOTV efforts. If you’re in Philly or the surrounding suburbs, or were planning on traveling here to do GOTV, stay informed about the current situation. Philly.com is a top source, and we’ll try and do updates here on Daily Kos.
