Last weekend, my mother stopped on her way home from visiting my other siblings and actually stayed one night. She arrived mid-day on Sunday and, a couple hours later in the middle of gossiping along, she told me that my father's remaining sister had called to say she'd been told to pass along the news that one of my cousins (NOT one of her own children) was having a heart transplant. Where I work, Mom thought. Could I check?
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
I did. She had. I've been to see her a couple of times. I didn't get in twice because when I can try does tend to coincide with when she and the staff are attending to various functions. Her second husband (of 24 years), whom I had never before met, seems a very nice man.
She's recovering well and will be moved out of intensive care soon, if she hasn't been already. They won't consider letting her head for the parking lot and go home, though, her husband says. Well, damn.
One reason I couldn't go back to see my cousin after work on Friday was that I had to get home to babysit. My daughter and a friend were taking their girls to see "Phantom of the Opera", which is currently running here in Portland. And you can't really expect a three-year-old to sit quietly through a live performance.
He did sit quietly through a couple of the stories from "Dragons at Crumbling Castle", which is a collection of several very early Terry Pratchett stories. Although it may have been mostly because he likes the attention involved in being read to - I only heard him giggle once, and there were several jokes I thought he would probably understand. Actually, he behaved spectacularly well for me. He's three - being cranky is his job - and he was really good all evening.
My daughter posted on Facebook on Saturday, asking where the laundry room dryers were. I said they were probably being replaced with something more expensive. One of the other neighbors said they've been stolen - and check with the manager if we didn't believe that. I said, either way, they're probably being replaced with something more expensive. I was thinking of doing laundry this weekend. Good thing I wasn't planning on a specific day.
Things at work got me worked up on Friday. I am supposed to be notified if somebody does something like what happened, and I was not. Apparently, I am supposed to be able to read minds instead. I can only hope the package gets through to the people in Canada who are waiting for it.
I suggested to my boss that he remind the person in question of these facts and tell him that if he really wants a better job, he should start doing the one he has properly. Not that I think my boss will do anything of the kind, but he will have been notified of there being a problem if I do. It is always possible that I may calm down before the weekend is over.
I got my bank statement on Saturday. Due to how I budget, I pretty much have to reconcile my statements as soon as I get them. I could not get it to reconcile - and I thought it was going to take forever to figure out the problem. I keep my bank records in an Excel file on my computer, and everything checked as having been received by the bank up to the date I expected it to - but there was a $12.50 discrepancy. I have no idea what I did that made it clear the problem was exactly and only with the line in my file where the one $12.50 transaction I had made was listed, but when "#VALUE" shows up instead of something sensible, that's what it means. The fix is easy - delete the line, smooth everything out, and insert it again. Everything checks just fine, now.
My daughter is planning a barbeque for tomorrow (at least I think tomorrow), and she bought a couple of portobello mushrooms. I had remarked during the last one (we had hot dogs last Sunday) that I think grilled portobellos make fine substitutes for hamburgers, and since she's planning hamburgers, that's what I get. Needless to say, yum.
