According to one poll released by F&M today, it just might be so. (PDF)
Consider, in particular, the language used by the pollster:
Would you favor or oppose a constitutional amendment that would allow homosexual couples to get legally married?
Typically we would expect the use of "homosexual" to reduce support, but the poll apparently found otherwise: 33% of respondents were found to be "strongly" in favor and 17% were "somewhat" in favor. By contrast, 37% were strongly opposed and 5% were somewhat opposed. 8% didn't know or wouldn't answer. For those of us who are slow at math, that adds up to 50% total are in favor.
To be honest, I question whether perhaps there was some confusion about effect of the proposed amendment, but, in fact, these results show a stark turnaround from when the same question was asked in June of 2009.
Achieving marriage equality in Pennsylvania by legislation will be especially difficult: Republicans control all branches of the state government. But I think it's entirely possible that by the time we have a sufficient number of democrats in place, the people will be behind us.
I'd say that's exceptionally good news as we head into the holiday weekend. Maybe my home state is moving faster than I would have expected.
