This is a pretty out-there proposal, and possibly a jump-the-shark moment for the few who believe I haven't already jumped it, but drastic times could call for drastic measures. Failure to raise the debt ceiling is for all intents and purposes an act of economic terrorism waged by a seditious group of American politicians with the direct intent of causing serious harm to America. Our political enemies could only dream of doing the kind of damage to America that our own House of Representatives to poised to in the coming weeks. Conceding that what Tea Party Republicans in the House intend to do to the economy is terrorism, would it not be a nuclear option for Obama to declare known domestic terrorists as enemy combatants and have then sent to the very place Republicans insist enemy combatants should be detained....that being Guantanamo Bay?
Frankly, I don't see any hope of a debt ceiling increase coming out of the House of Representatives. Even with a wholesale capitulation by Obama, I don't think 218 votes exist in the House to get a debt ceiling increase through. The majority of the Republican caucus is wholly invested in testing the consequences of this debt ceiling vote at this point, knowing that in the rubble left behind, they would most likely have the doormat laid out for them to recreate America according to the most laissez faire wet dream ever dreamed up by a Cato Institute understudy. They see this not only as their chance to ruin Obama, but to turn America into something resembling Brazil.
With this in mind, as it gets closer to the debt ceiling vote, I would suggest Obama not take off the table the idea to declare these economic terrorists enemy combatants, ship them to Guantanamo until a debt ceiling vote can be taken with enough votes for a quorom knowing that the ceiling would pass. How would this play? Disastrously of course. It would be a constitutional crisis. Obama would assuredly be impeached. And America would be torn further apart. But would even that scenario be worse than the fallout created by America defaulting on its debt? I honestly don't the answer to that and lean towards "no".
This diary is not an endorsement of the stated idea, but a proposal that underscores the serious of what we face...which is a threat against America imposed by our own people. Given what's at stake in a couple short weeks, it's time we start thinking of creative solutions...and ideally come up with one less apocalyptic than this one.
