Good News Roundups are a long-running daily series. Our writers collect upbeat news about the nation and world, news that down-beating traditional media for many reasons do not publish. Not wishing to flee or freeze, with the help of Good News Roundups, we engage. We don’t passively wait for the future to arrive, we help build it. We know that doom scrolling impairs physical and mental health, so we choose good news. You can find more essays by our writers here and here.
Welcome to this Good News Roundup!
If you’re new to Good News Roundups, please check out our longer welcome.
Happy Birthday, Gnusies!
Sometime during May 2017, GoodNewsRoundup posted her first Daily Kos diary. The exact date disappeared in the sands of the veldt.
How did you find the Good News Roundups? What are your recollections? Tag/What has this series meant to you? If you’ve answered this question before, please feel free to bring it forward. What are your takeaways from the Roundups? What do you bring to the group? What’s your favorite part of the Roundups. What’s the question about the Roundups you want to answer? (No rush to answer, we’ve got all month.)

WineRev’s Good and Goofy Notes
Watch for WineRev’s G&G notes in the comments to see what others went through, struggled with, and surmounted in the past. His G&G comments are mini Good News Roundups. You can find all his comments here, even today’s, once he posts it. Tech Tip: You can search for >>> in Roundups to quickly find his comments.
WineRev, Thursday, May 2:
Whew! The dust on the wall has barely settled from flipping over the calendar to “May” and the First Thursday has ignited already! Mokurai has made sure we will NOT miss it, going across the Universe in both space and time to bring us news of galaxies of eons ago that stopped making stars all the way to puppy romping videos and smiling turtle moments. I mean, how could you not love a Round Up like this?
So the Gnuville Breakfast Brunch is welcoming stars-----as in newly arriving Gnusies like YOU, to sip into coffee, tea, mocha-cocoa and or mimosas! Then you too can puppy-romp over to the Breakfast Foods Bake Shop and Hot Stop and get yourself a plate or bowl or napkin of fresh croissants, something hot and/or sizzling that arouses noses of the morning, or even something softly rattling or rustling in a cardboard box that only needs a little pouring IN to a bowl with a little pouring ON of some milk and then spoon work.
Finally the Stellar Formation and 4-Paw Lounge offers recliners, sofas, wingbacks and kitchenette nooks for tuning in to the Inter-Tubes for todays Round Up of Good News here…..and here…..and right behind that link…...and under that click……..There’s plenty to read and lots of comments to be made, recs to be added, digressions to be cosine-d (different than putting your signature on the extra line of a loan or credit card application), and snickers and snark to be squared-rooted, cube-rooted or even round rooted onto your pixel screen and shared with everyone else Wi-Fi-ing today. Thank you, Mokurai for launching us! See you around the Trial coverage and windy teleprompters……
Science
Jack Guy, CNN:
Scientists working in Indonesia have observed an orangutan intentionally treating a wound on their face with a medicinal plant, the first time this behavior has been documented.
Rakus, a male Sumatran orangutan, treated a wound on his face by chewing leaves from a climbing plant named Akar Kuning and repeatedly applying the juice to it, according to a paper published in the journal Scientific Reports on Thursday.
Rakus then covered the wound with the chewed up leaves, which are used in traditional medicine to treat illnesses like dysentery, diabetes and malaria, said scientists.
Scientists work out the effects of exercise at the cellular level
The health benefits of exercise are well known but new research shows that the body's response to exercise is more complex and far-reaching than previously thought. In a study on rats, a team of scientists from across the United States has found that physical activity causes many cellular and molecular changes in all 19 of the organs they studied in the animals.
Exercise lowers the risk of many diseases, but scientists still don't fully understand how exercise changes the body on a molecular level. Most studies have focused on a single organ, sex, or time point, and only include one or two data types.
To take a more comprehensive look at the biology of exercise, scientists with the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC) used an array of techniques in the lab to analyze molecular changes in rats as they were put through the paces of weeks of intense exercise. Their findings appear in Nature.
Please share good science news with us! (Especially JSWT, health, environment.)
A good place to look for science news if you are waiting for the Sunday Roundup is the archive of Overnight News Digest. On Saturdays, the OND always focuses on science, though not all of it is devoted to what I would call Good Science News.

You can use the map’s zoom arrows to resize the view and focus on your pin to find neighbors. Please note that the Google Map, though convenient to operate, is visually inaccurate because, among other issues, it enlarges North America and shrinks Africa [Maps present a distorted view of the world by kos].

Our Roundup is almost open!
Thank you for fighting for truth and justice with all us Gnusies! 40% of our Readers don’t visit every day, 50% of us do, and 10% are here for the first time! We all do what we can. For 5 years, we’ve shared positive news, laughed, organized, resisted, rebelled, revolted without being revolting, relied, rested, mentored, created, crossed rivers, chewed our cud, puffed methane out both ends, and laughed. Here’s looking at you, kid, and standing upwind! Beginners, you are cordially invited to comment!
As always, please share more Good News than I can find or provide.
This is a group diary, and by my power I declare this Good Gnus Salo(o)n open! Let the good-news sharing and community building begin!
Power with, not power over ❤️ ✊ ❤️
