Good news from Texas for a change.
For those not aware of this story it actually started in December 2013 when Kari Rene Hunt's estranged husband asked her to meet him in a hotel with their children and leave the children with him for a short visitation while he was in town.
When Kari got there Kari's estranged husband ambushed her and trapped her in the bathroom.
Follow below the fold for the rest.
Kari's oldest daughter (9 years old) attempted to call 911 for help but was not able to reach anyone because this motel required dialing a 9 before the outside number, in other words 9-911.
Kari ended up being killed by her estranged husband.
Kari's family started an online petition and lobbied heavily for enacting laws that would require motels/hotels, etc to allow direct 911 dialing. After all it is an emergency that one should not have to think about at that critical moment, Oh I need to dial 9 first then 911, least of all not for a child.
Online Petition and more detail of what happened
Children are taught to dial 911 in an emergency and that is what Kari's daughter done.
Now we will never know if Kari's life would have been saved had her daughter been able to reach someone for help but this is something no family or victim should have to suffer through.
So on May 15th, 2015 Texas Governor Abbott signed this into law. Texas joins Illinois and Maryland in signing this important bill into law.
This law requires businesses with multi-line phone systems to have direct 911 dialing.
