Last night, Wednesday, May 13th about 8pm., three young men got in a car to go shopping on the south side of Chicago. A vehicle pulled up next to them and gunned the three down.
Twenty year old Shamari Salter was taking his mother's car to go shopping, getting ready to escort his next door neighbor to her prom. He died at the scene from a shot to his head. Another 19 year old, Terrence Canady, was also shot in the head and stomach and died shortly after arriving at the hospital. The third, also 19, was shot in the chest and is listed in serious condition.
Three more tragedies from gun violence, a total of 15 shootings on Wednesday night in the City of Chicago. For one mother, it's her second time for tragedy within a year.
Come below.
The Chicago Tribune reported:
Asked why someone would kill her Shamari, [his mother, Stephanie] Franklin broke into tears. "Lately, you don't have to have a reason to die no more. You just wake up and you're dead."
Shamari worked part time and was a part of a program to help kids get off the street, a friend of his father said. "He was a decent kid who kept to himself and was never into too much trouble."
Stephanie Franklin's first son, Shiquille Salter, died last summer. He was standing on a street corner near his home, shot several times in the chest during a bloody, gun-plagued Fourth of July in the city in which 82 people were shot and 14 died.
Shiquille had been a college student and reportedly "tutored local children and helped teach a youth ministries program."
No one has yet been charged in either shooting.
The proliferation of unregistered, unaccounted-for firearms is a national disgrace, a nightmare horror story that keeps on happening.
