The idea is to get rid of any opposing voice
At an Institute for National Security Studies conference in Tel Aviv, Livni, head of the Hatnuah party, maintained, “The elections are not over zero-VAT [Lapid’s controversial plan to cancel value-added tax on first-time home purchases], but about whether there will be a Zionist or extremist country here.” She said the elections would be between a Zionist camp and dangerous, extreme parties that must be prevented from taking over and destroying the country.
With the current situation in the Israel-Palestine conflict Benjamin Netanyahu is betting on a lurch to the right....again
If you think our right wing have some interesting fights than this one in Israel puts those to shame.
What does he want to do?
Netanyahu’s move to bring down and government and go to early elections followed a meeting late Monday night with Lapid, in which the finance minister rejected the conditions set by Netanyahu for keeping the present government in power. These included supporting the Jewish nation-state bill, freezing the zero VAT plan, stopping his “sabotage” of the government and the prime minister, transferring billions of shekels to the Defense Ministry for training and equipment, and freeing the funds for the moving of army training bases to the Negev.
So he wants to give settlers in the West Bank cover with Israeli laws whilst keeping the Palestinians under Military law. It amounts to annexation.
Of course more spending on the military and absolute hatred for Iran must be shown at all times.
In a speech on Tuesday following his dismissal of Lapid and Livni, Netanyahu accused the two ministers of being soft against Iran and the Palestinians, and soft in their defense of Jerusalem and of Israel as the Jewish nation-state.
Gosh if only we can elect a Hawk in 2016 then the whole Middle East will really be a fun place.
I doubt this has anything to do with the two fired ministers and has more to do with the current situation in Israel and Palestine. In this current atmosphere of heightened hatred Benjamin Netanyahu is backing on fear and loathing to win. Then the 2 State solution is truly dead and buried if it wasn't already, all the little if any restraint in dealing with the Palestinians will evaporate completely. Impossible demands will be made on the Palestinian Authority and rightly refused, then the carnage will start all over again.
Any other country in the world with such a leader the US would be vociferously condemning, but not this one.
"I will not tolerate an opposition within the government anymore," he said.
Wow, how democratic of you.
John Kerry's reply when asked about the election
The US Secretary of State, John Kerry, said he would not comment on Israeli politics.
But he said he hoped for a government that could "negotiate and move towards resolving the differences between Israelis and Palestinians".
Well that certainly excludes any government lead by Benjamin Netanyahu.
Perhaps we can include Israel in nuclear disarmament talks as well?
