From Himself.
Police in Pinellas Park said that a Florida man accidentally shot himself in the face, and then died on Tuesday while he was threatening his wife and dog with a gun.
Yeah.... seems he was arguing with his wife - and dog - and to make a salient point he got his handgun and "pulled back the hammer".
Pinellas Park police said that Emery had pointed a gun at the dog during the argument, and had pulled back the hammer to emphasize his seriousness.
This is probably a good teaching aid: "Add faster Jimmy or I'ma pull back this hammer! The dog will get it if you don't a-hurry up!""
The PROBLEM is once you have "pulled back the hammer" you have to either shoot the gun or release the hammer safely.
Cue Foghorn Leghorn sayin' "I say Safely, that is."
But Emery made the mistake of pointing the gun at himself while trying to release the hammer, and a bullet discharged into his face.
Dead at the scene.
Family safe.
Dog safe.
And no, shed nary a tear for this genius: He was cruisin' for a bruisin' 9 ways from Sunday.
Emery has had 34 contacts with Pinellas Park police since 2012, the department said. He recently was arrested three times in six days: Oct. 12 for domestic battery; Oct. 15 on charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest; and Oct. 17 on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash. Those cases were pending at the time of his death.
State records show Emery was convicted of drunken driving in 1977; carrying a concealed weapon in 1978; and disorderly conduct and public intoxication in 1983. He was charged with domestic violence in 2013, but the case was dropped, according to records.
I like how the Pinella Times described the 'shooting' as "accidental".
This was utterly negligent: not one thing accidental about it.
100% Utterly Fatal Dumbassery.
Darwin Award Quality.
But we can still be thankful that the Good Him was able to get the drop on the Bad Him, saving his family - and his dog.
