It bears repeating in simpler terms than what I wrote earlier today: Rich Lowry, writing for Politico, is openly advocating a return to a Jim Crow society: that discrimination is not something the government should do anything about. I'm really surprised more people are not raising hell about this column.
I had thought there was consensus in Washington about Civil Rights at the most basic level: that discrimination was wrong and against the law; that the government was a necessary actor to ensure the equal protection of the law; and that our society is better for the government having done so.
Rich Lowry says if any business in America wishes to discriminate, then the customer should just go somewhere else. Unfuckingbelievable!
Rich Lowry is far, far outside the mainstream on this. This is the talk of an extremist. This is the kind of thing I expect to see on NewsMax or WorldNetDaily. Perhaps the Sons of Confederate Veterans Facebook page. But for a Washington Insiderdom rag like Politico to give voice in the Capitol to someone openly advocating for a return to Jim Crow is absolutely astounding.
