Received this e-mail today from Senate Ed Markey (D. MA) regarding the Military Justice Improvement Act:
It’s simply unacceptable.
According to the Department of Defense, an estimated 26,000 instances of rape, sexual assault, and unwanted sexual contact occurred in our military just last year. A vast majority of these cases weren’t even reported.
In the cases that are reported, commanding officers have the ability to overrule convictions, even forgo any jail time for the offender.
This isn’t justice. The men and women who serve in our military do not deserve to be treated with anything less than the utmost respect. And when they are victims of crimes such as these, they deserve to see real justice done.
The first bill I cosponsored as a member of the United States Senate was the Military Justice Improvement Act. It would transfer prosecution of sexual assault cases from the chain of command to independent, impartial military prosecutors.
Right now, this bill is coming up for a vote in the Senate. So I’m joining my colleagues and the Daily Kos to gather as much grassroots support as we can to call for its passage. And I need you to help.

This is a bipartisan, common sense measure that will protect heroes from all across the country. Let’s make sure our support for change is clear and undeniable.
Thank you.
