Okay, I will state up front that this diary will be short and hopefully sugary sweet.
Unless you have been living in Rupert Murdoch's secret bunker during the past 24 hours, you might have heard that a Senatorial candidate from Missouri said something rather "enlightening"...
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...
In an interview with KTVI-TV on Sunday, the GOP Senate nominee was asked if he supported abortion in the case of rape.
"From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare," said Akin said of pregnancy caused by rape. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist."
There are several other diaries that can better explain how insanely ridiculous and offensive Mr. Akin's words are. Other than expressing my firm solidarity with those opinions, I won't offer any of my own.
But that's not why I donated to the Incumbent Senator from Missouri, Claire McCaskill.
I am a Liberal with a Capital L. A Progressive with a Capital P.
Claire McCaskill, at her best, is a moderate Democrat. moderate with a small m.
But thank goodness for Lawrence O'Donnell. This savvy yet passionate political veteran reminded me, reminded us, of exactly what's at stake.
In the "Rewrite" segment of his show tonight, Lawrence waxed poetic about Senator McCaskill. Not because she's a champion of progressives. Not because she always votes the way we would like her to.
But because she is a Democrat, with a Capital D. When the chips are down, when Obamacare needed one more vote, when Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor needed confirmation to the Supreme Court, Claire was on our side.
You think Todd "Legitimate Rape" Akin would vote for our best interests? Or any Republican who might replace him?
Lawrence, thanks for reminding us of the big picture. We can't maintain a majority in the Senate (or retake the House) without the courage of moderate Democrats who have to campaign in conservative-leaning states.
I'm not saying I miss the Blue Dogs. I don't.
But Claire McCaskill would be light years ahead of any Republican as the presiding senator from Missouri.
Show Claire some love. If you can't muster that, show her some respect. And a few dollars, if you can spare them.

If you have any doubts, ask yourself one question. Do you want Claire McCaskill picking the next Supreme Court Justice, or Todd Akin?
