When I have written diaries on Daily Kos in the past, it has been to talk about youth perspectives on the progressive movement today, or to do some analysis over on Daily Kos Elections about different races around the country, and where we can pick up seats. Today I am incredibly proud to share news of a different sort. As executive director of Students for a New American Politics, it is my pleasure to announce that we have endorsed Chris Murphy & Eric Griego for Congress.
As the nation's largest student-run political action committee, we are very serious about electing progressive leaders whose ideas are important not just to get our country back on track today, but to steer our country towards a more progressive future. We are confident that Chris and Eric embody these characteristics, and will both be important voices in their respective chambers.
Just as important however, is the fact that we are now accepting applications to become 2012 Organizing Fellows. To download the application and learn more, visit our website www.snappac.org, or skip straight to application and download it at http://www.snappac.org/...
While it's not easy to run a full time political action committee as a bunch of students, we are proud of what this program has achieved in the past six years, and have seen the results it can achieve. Not only have our organizers been on the ground working in some of the closest races in the country (Joe Courtney in '06, Al Franken '08, Tom Periello '08), but we have also been providing the vital foot in the door for the next generation of progressive organizers, propelling our Fellows into careers as campaign staff, union organizers, and preparing them for careers in local government, issue advocacy organizations, and at non-profits. Because of this success, we're going to double the amount of fellowships we offer next summer to forty. That's forty students who may have never found their way into organized politics, walking away with the skills and experience they need to be progressive organizers for the rest of their lives.
But we can't do it alone. Our fellows need money to pay their living expenses, and it's especially important to us that we can fully fund our fellows so that students from all economic backgrounds can afford to take this opportunity to get involved. Will you make a gift of $20.12 today to help us build our best fellowship program yet?
If you won't take my word for it, hear what Chris Murphy had to say about how SNAP helped him when he first ran in 2006:
