Today, while perusing Halperin's generally awful The Page, I came across an item that really made my heart swell with joy.
Hillary's gonna be a team player! She's hitting the campaign trail for Obama next month!!
At a press event held by Hillary Clinton about FEMA trailers out on Long Island today, I asked her about the campaigning she planned to do for Barack Obama between now and Election Day.
She said, "During the month of August, they've asked me to go to several states. But I'm going to leave it to them to announce. I don't want to in any way get ahead of them. But, you know, I'm doing whatever I'm asked and whatever I can."
I would imagine those states will be Ohio, Florida, Michigan and Pennsylvania, the land of Hardworking Americans.
Our party is already consolidating quite nicely--but a big chunk of Hillary's voters are still undecided, or even planning to vote for Mccain. Indeed, with our party ID advantage, merely improving those numbers by a FEW percentages will have a major effect in the states where Barack is weakest.
Now imagine: Hillary is set loose on Mccain.
We already know the woman is champion when it comes to attacking. I can say with grudging admiration that she beat Obama down on a regular basis, and basically fought him to a draw because of her harsh, (generally bogus) attacks. I am THRILLED that Obama never hit back, because if her supporters are resentful and bitter at him now, imagine how hard it would have been to unite if he actually ever did anything to her.
He ran a superior campaign in almost every way (which is why he won, of course) but he never even came close to going on the offense the way that she did.
Indeed, being on Hillary's bad side was a miserable experience.
But now she'll be going after Mccain! And her supporters, all of who respect and believe her, will be hearing about how terrible his health care plan is, how thoughtless his Iraq policy is, how lacking his knowledge of the economy is, how inadequate his climate change agenda is and etc, etc.
The best thing is, Mccain's camp will NEVER, EVER attack her. To do so would immediately remind her supporters about how much they really do hate Republicans and they would move firmly towards Obama!
So that makes her our secret weapon.
When it comes to the issues, Mccain is on the wrong side of most Americans. Hillary doesn't even have to employ the famous Clintonian logic. She just needs to repeat, over and over again, the positions that Mccain actually holds. The ways in which he is drastically out of step with Americans.
If Hillary chooses to be an energetic surrogate, and if she dispatches Bill to stump as well, I just don't see how we can lose this election.
And if that's the choice she makes, I will send her money to pay off her debt and I hope others do as well.
