Yeah, yeah. I know. Another motivational "raw rah" speech.
I hate these things myself, so let me keep it brief.
Yes, they got the damn thing through the House and it's likely to get through the Senate. It's egregious. It's unconstitutional. It flies in the face of the principles this country was founded on. It's a g'damned disgrace. But let's not turn a defeat into a rout.
To the people who want to abandon the entire party on this. I'm going to take you by the shoulders and look you right in the eye. I understand completely where you are coming from. I don't just sympathize, I'm pissed off too, but consider this.
Yes, some Democrats voted for this crap, but you know what? The vast majority didn't. Could they have done a better job fighting this? Yes. But then again, we saw some passionate, vocal, articulate and thoughtful actions by many Democrats. Did we see some slimy, slinking, dirty, green (yellow/blue)-dog Democrats submit to the administration with their tails between their legs? You bet, and they are scumbags, but the Republicans were worse. Even the few that had the cajones to stand up initially to Bush eventually caved.
Yes, torture is an abomination but there's more than that on the table. There is the bumbling "War on Punctuation", global warming, worsening international relations, the right for people to love and live with who they want, out of control spending and a whole bunch of people pushing to make this country into a theocracy. You certainly aren't going to see anything done about torture or any of those other things if you enable the Republicans to maintain their hegemony.
When you choose to fight you are going to get knocked down sometimes. You don't win by walking away when you do. So some Democrats choose not to fight and screwed us on this? Don't do what they did. I understand you're pissed. Get pissed but keep fighting. Let's get in a position where we can do something. In the meantime, make a big noise about this. You are either for torture or against it.
Next. To the people criticizing the above people. Knock it off. This is a painful issue. I know you're pissed and want to get the bums out, and you aren't the only one. People are reacting to something they believe strongly in (and rightly so) and emotions are high. Don't enable the Republicans over this. You know what would make Rove's day more than getting this POS bill signed? Getting it signed and dividing the Democrats on this issue enough where we snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Berating frustrated fellow liberals and Democrats isn't going to win in November.
Now stop fighting each other, and get back out there and kick the bums out.
