    There wasn't a seriously threat that sotomayor wouldn't be confirmed. Certain GOP senators (e.g. lindsey graham) were total dicks to her (and i think that did really hurt the GOP among latino voters), but her confirmation was never is any serious doubt. If they had seriously threatened to filibuster her nomination, that would have been even more suicidal. Likewise, i could imagine Grijalva getting some dickish treatment like sotomayor (and in that sense i agree that republicans won't change their spots easily), but not even the GOP would be stupid enough to filibuster a latino cabinet nominee.

      Those folks threatened to vote her down. My memory is that it was by no means certain at first that she would get enough Republican votes to avoid a filibuster, or who they would be. Also, controversial doesn't mean "was filibustered to death." The nomination of Justice Rehnquist to be Chief Justice was controversial, and something like 35 senators voted against him, an unprecedented number for a successful Chief Justice nominee.
